What is palm oil, and what is it used for? Palm oil comes from the palm fruit of the African oil palm tree. It comes from the oil palm fruit's mesocarp (reddish pulp). Because of the high beta-carotene content, palm oil is naturally red. Nigeria was the world's third-largest producer in 2011, with 2.3 million hectares (5.7-106 acres) under cultivation. The palm oil industry's potential makes it one of Nigeria's and other developing countries' most lucrative sources of revenue.

Types of Palm Oil

1 Palm Kernel Oil

Palm kernel oil is derived from the seed inside the palm fruit, which is known as the kernel because it contains a high concentration of lauric acid and saturated fat.

When cool, it is naturally white and solid, but when warmed, it becomes transparent and liquid. Palm kernel oil is useful in food manufacturing because it is a stable cooking fat that resists oxidation and rancidity.

2 Fractionated Palm oil:

FCO can be easily separated due to the different melting points of different triglycerides found in palm oil by carefully heating the oil to a specific temperature. The fats are then separated into liquid (olein, which contains 46% saturated fat) and solid (stearin, which contains 65% saturated fat), which can then be used for a variety of purposes.
